Athlone Castle Visitor Centre is a wonderful interactive experience that highlights the history of the castle, the town and the people of Athlone

Reopened in 2012 following extensive renovations, the Athlone Castle Visitor Centre features eight exhibition rooms that tell the history of Athlone from pre-historic settlement right through the Siege of 1691 and onto more modern times.

There are areas to dress up in period costumes, try to ‘Capture the Castle’ on one of the interactive games, test your strength on some weapons and much more.

You can get hands-on at Athlone Castle while also reading and hearing about the rich history of the town, its environs and the people who have lived here.

Highlights include:

  • A rich collection of artefacts relevant to Athlone
  • 360-degree cinema on the violent Siege of Athlone 1691
  • Dress-up areas and interactive games
  • Giant chess set outside (seasonal)
  • Stunning views of Athlone town and River Shannon

Athlone Castle is wonderful to visit at any time, but particularly during events. You can check out our events calendar here. If you are interested in staging an event at Athlone Castle, please contact us.
